Middle Passage

In honor of Juneteenth, I have created a pattern that is a monument for slavery. The middle passage refers to the time spent inside a slave ship by people kidnapped in Africa and forced into slavery in the Americas.

I’ve made a design on this scarf to represent the long journey of the middle passage, all those bodies packed into shelves like sardines, people puking, pooping and dying next to each other for months at a time. And living through it because they had to. It is a testament to the strength of the human spirit and a way for me as a black woman to honor my ancestors
